There should be an ?XWayland? compatibility mode, enabled by default,
which allows old X11-centric apps to continue running under Wayland.

Does anyone here run SimH VAXstation emulation (or other SimH graphics)
under current Raspberry Pi OS? Specifically under Trixie which provides
    Wayland rather than X-windows?

I have a VAXstation 3100 m38 configuration which works fine under Windows
11, or Debian on pc. It used to work fine on Raspberry Pi under Bookworm .

Upgrading to Trixie (or installing a clean copy), which uses Wayland,
compiling a new executable, an running it gets to the point that it would create the graphics screen window and just hangs.

In theory I could revert Trixie to using X rather than Wayland, but I?d
prefer to use the standard release.

Anyone know appropriate incantations to make SimH work under Wayland?

    Regards,

    Paul.

Have you tried switching to X in raspi-config ?

There ?should?, but SimH just hangs at the point where it would be creating
the main graphics window. No messages that I can see.

Any clues as to how to debug?

No. Would I need to recompile SimH to pick up a different runtime?

I thought it was because Wayland is newer, and thus a fortiori better.
Redhat says so, it must be true.

I see XOrg is still getting a bit of maintenance. And there is the XLibre
fork which is really making some people upset. (Slackware current has XLibre in its "testing" packages, FWIW.)

One easy way to check is to try the xdpyinfo command (part of the
x11-utils package). If this spits out a bunch of details about
available display modes, then that means you have some kind of
X11-compatible server running. If it says ?unable to open display ""?,
    then you don?t.

See, you are in agreement. "Newer is (therefore) better".

What exactly did you read into my message? My reply did not say anything positive or negative about X Libre. The tone of your response seems a
    little edgy.

But to answer your question (in what I consider to be a polite manner) I
might try it some day when I start using Slackware Current (or when Pat releases Slackware current as 16.0). Until then I will cheerfully continue
to beam programs using X across my network using XOrg.
